Duxford Airspace Phase Two Interactives
|
Working with Centre Screen, Heritage Multimedia Limited has recently completed two specialist exhibits for Phase II of the new Airspace project at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. These include an interactive family tree mapping the development of the aerospace industry, and an interactive that enables visitors to vote on various topics relating to the debate on the future of aviation. Both exhibits work from a centralised control room provided by Electrosonic and are fully integrated into the exhibition structure designed by Real Studios.
The family tree interactive provides a large map charting the development of companies within the aerospace sector over the last one hundred years. The visitor, using a roller ball, can move a cursor over the map and access detailed information about the companies. The map serves to visualise the organic nature of the development of the aerospace industry. It also provides the visitor with an overview of the industry, and demonstrates how the shape of the aerospace sector has changed over time. The interface allows the visitor to dip in and out of information on any company from one screen.
The voting interactive consists of a system enabling visitors to vote on various topics relating to the future of aviation. Visitors are presented with a question on a screen and invited to vote “Yes” or “No” by pressing one of two buttons. The interactive adds up the votes each day as they are entered and presents them to the visitor on an LED display. For this interactive Heritage developed software to integrate with the complex electronics controlling a series of one hundred LED lights, each LED representing one percent of the voting spread when lit.
The interactives were designed with accessibility in mind from the very start. For example, as both interactives use text-based content that can be changed by the client, text to speech software was incorporated to convert text to sound for visitors with visual impairments.
Simple software tools were also provided for both interactives to enable the customer to maintain them. They can update the content on the family tree as the aerospace industry changes, and update the questions displayed on the voting interactive to keep the display current, refresh the visitor experience, and track how visitors are voting on a variety of topics.
