Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts – Big Draw 2006

Heritage Multimedia Limited worked with artist Becca Smith to create an interactive drawing experience for this year’s nationwide Big Draw event.
The experience used Heritage’s video filters software to capture, manipulate in real time and then project large-scale images of the human figure onto two wall mounted ‘canvasses’. Becca and visitors were then able to work directly onto the canvasses to trace and colour the images as they moved, ebbed and flowed at pace, creating broad sweeps of colour and beautiful distortions of moving figures.
The experience proved incredibly popular with visitors, especially families who were able to work collaboratively, with some family members drawing and some modelling and performing in front of the video capture system.
It also engaged artists, who explored the interaction between the projected and painted elements of the canvas, and the re-presentation of the human figure resulting from the manipulation and motion of the video.
Visitors attending the concurrent exhibition of works by Francis Bacon were also intrigued by the opportunity to explore first hand the process of the manipulation of the body so prevalent in Bacon’s work.
